It has something like code completion but in my opinion, you can’t really see if the things suggested by the editor belong there or not. With these, we can create analyses with directly added text and explanations. As we can see there is the possibility to create so-called Notebooks. Notebooks run as a web application allowing you to create presentable reports with inline visualizations than can be reactive. Jupyter Notebooks / JupyterLab Jupyter Notebooks run in the browser I hope this will be improved in the future and also through Kite. Sometimes it feels like the completion is not working properly. One downside I experienced with this editor is the positive mentioned IntelliSense. This makes VS-Code to one of (if not the) best editors for Python. Moreover, this editor offers a variable explorer and also the possibility to run Notebooks. With this mode, nothing but you and your code exists. You want to stay focused and code your thing. Finally, this editor is suitable for a lot of languages. Additionally, there are also a lot of extensions available. Moreover, GIT commands are also integrated. (Similar to Kite but was there a lot longer) Also, it also has the debugger right into the editor.

Syntax highlighting and autocomplete with IntelliSense that provides suggestions based on imported modules etc. This IDE is perhaps my favorite Python IDE. Visual Studio Code Visual Studio CodeĪ Microsoft editor for everything. If you want to check this IDE out go to JET BRAINS. Finally, you can also expand it by adding some plugins. ipynb to write Notebooks.īut it is a great IDE and I can definitely recommend it.

We can see the Variables in the Console but who wants to code the whole analysis in there? Also, only the Professional Edition can read and write. The Community Edition, however, also lacks a variable explorer. But are there negative points? Actually, I can’t tell you about the Professional Edition. P圜harm IDEĪgain, many positive facts about this IDE. So the code completion gets some advancement.

It also allows direct integration with Kite. Furthermore, if you have Anaconda already installed, you can use it directly as your project environment. You can also choose between different themes for your IDE. It looks great and comes with a lot of features like: I am using this IDE very frequently for general coding. Besides, they also offer a Professional Edition with more advanced stuff. The P圜harm IDE is freely available in a Community Edition. They made a famous Java IDE, the IntelliJ IDEA. If you know Java then you maybe already heard of them.

If you want to install Spyder, the best way is to download Anaconda. Spyder contains also features like code completion (even extended now with Kite) and syntax highlighting. Finally, we can also run Jupyter Notebooks in Spyder. Moreover, we can even decide between inline-plotting or in extra plot explorer. This is quite similar to the code cells in Notebooks. In these chunks, you can run sections of your code that you might want to stick together. Some Spyder functions There’s even moreįurthermore, you can create chunks in your Spider scripts. Yes, there are ways to implement a variable explorer in Jupyter Notebooks but they are not preinstalled (yet). And with a variable explorer, we can find them instantly. But have you ever encountered the problem remembering your variables? This is huge. Of course, they are pretty nice to connect coding and creating a report. I shortly preempt with a fact about Jupyter Notebooks. So If you are new into the field you may think well is this so important? Let me tell you simply this: IT IS! Therefore, we can see all stored variables, their type and also some of the values. With Spyder, this is directly integrated on the right top of the window. What is necessary in this case, is a variable explorer. For this purpose, we have a lot of variables that we store. As a Data Scientist we do a lot of data importing, data manipulation, plotting and perhaps model building. And we see this directly when we fire up the editor.

What is special about Spyder and why is it in my opinion one of the best editors for Data Science? As already mentioned, it was built for Data Science. Currently, in January 2020 it is updated to Version 4 and has Kite integrated. It does not look pretty nice, but it was specifically developed for the field. Probably one of the most underestimated IDEs for Data Science.
